Species we worked on
It is truly amazing how much dogs can learn and adapt, and the ones we have worked with are living proof of this. We have worked on over 12 distinct species and across 7 different countries. These species ranged from insects, to large mammals, birds and reptiles. Not only have our canine partners located their scats, but also the actual live animals, their eggs, nests, carcasses, and feathers.
Different species mean different habitats which present a new challenge, but so far no mountain, river, desert, sea, rainforest or snow has stopped us from finding our targets!
Wolves
Our main target species started in 2016 with Life MedWolf project, worked all over Portugal (Iberian Wolf) and Italy(Italian Wolf). We later moved on to all kinds of detection work from field surveys, impact studies, gene flow and social influence. We have been working alongside scientists all over the world in order to study and protect these wonderful animals.
Malaysian Tiger
In the deep rain forests of Malaysia aiding the University of Kent to collect data on these superb felines.
Badger
These fearless carnivores can be seen all around the globe. We were lucky enough to find them in central Portugal as part of a project to locate their dens and set camera traps to survey individuals.
Brown Bear
High in the Pyrenees mountains of France and Spain we had the privilege of finding scats of this magnificent apex predator, surveying one of the most steep terrains one can find, collecting important data.
Leopard

Clouded Leopard

Polecat
TuroCat is a project focused on preventing the extinction of the polecat in Catalonia. The dogs in EccoTrenca and researchers are working side by side to help protect the European Polecat.
American Badger
American Badgers are less and less seen in the California border with Mexico, where we spend a month trying to find scats from these shivty mustelids in order to prove presence or absence in the area.
Ocellated Lizard
In order to prove presence or absence, of these unique lizards in Parc naturel régional de Camargue, tour du valat found on this non invasive method a great possibility to find one off the most scaled-down sctas and collect data.
Tortoises
Mediterranean Turtles (eggs and live animal) - Joined CestMed on the southern coast of France, to help to prove presence of sea turtle nests on the beach
Little Bustard
(scats, eggs, feather, live chicks) - Réserve Naturelle des Coussouls de Crau took the opportunity to collect more data on these birds, by using the dog to find their scat, nests and even the little chicks that can camouflage in the high vegetation.

Turtles Eggs

Ivory
10 dogs were trained on Ivory in order to prove they can detect Ivory molecules just by smelling the air extracted from a container. Developing a cheap and easy methodology that can be implemented in any port around the world, specially in less developed countries where the ivory contraband is known to happen.
Plain Crau Grasshopper
Plain Crau Grasshopper , Critically endangered, this grasshopper is endemic to the area and a flagship for the conservation of this unique ecosystem.The population of these little insects has severely declined due to loss of the natural habitat to industrial areas, and the remaining subpopulations are isolated.
Hedgehog locust
After proving conservation detection dogs are very effective too locate these elusive masters of camouflage at Réserve naturelle nationale des Coussouls de Crau, we moved up to the top of the St. Victoire mountain in France and did our best to prove presence of Hedgehog locust on the many historical locations.
Green Sea Turtles
In order to improve detectability of sea turtle nests one of our conservation detection dogs was also trained on live green sea turtles.
Rodents
Took part on the rodent eradication program occurring at Lord Howe Island
Carcasses
In addition to all the targets, our Conservation detection dogs are also trained on carcasses.
Iberian Lynx
You can find Iberian Lynx individuals in the center south of Portugal and that is exactly what we did within the Life Lupi Lynx project.
