Supporting Population Monitoring at Companhia das Lezírias
Project Context: The European Badger (Meles meles) is a widespread and ecologically important carnivore in Portugal, yet understanding its population dynamics, social structures, and den (sett) usage patterns is crucial for effective conservation and land management. Companhia das Lezírias is an expansive, state-owned agro-forestry and natural area in central Portugal, renowned for its diverse ecosystems and commitment to sustainable management. As a vast and varied landscape, efficiently locating elusive badger setts across its extensive terrain presents a significant challenge for researchers seeking to monitor local populations.
Our Objective: Our team was engaged by Companhia das Lezírias to provide specialized assistance in their ongoing efforts to survey and monitor the European Badger population within their properties. Our primary objective was to efficiently and accurately locate badger dens, which are essential for subsequent scientific monitoring using camera traps, thus contributing vital data to their understanding of the local badger community.
Methodology: Recognizing the secretive nature of badgers and the dense or varied vegetation of their habitats, our approach leveraged the superior olfactory capabilities of highly trained conservation detection dogs:
Our specialized detection dog conducted systematic surveys across designated areas of Companhia das Lezírias. The dog was specifically trained to detect the unique scent of active badger setts, which can often be hidden from human sight.
Upon detection of a den, our team meticulously recorded its location. This precise identification of active setts was critical for the subsequent phase of the project: the strategic placement of camera traps.
By pinpointing den locations, our work enabled the researchers at Companhia das Lezírias to deploy camera traps effectively, capturing valuable data on badger social groups, individual activity, and reproductive success without direct disturbance to the animals.
Outcome & Impact: Our successful efforts in locating numerous European Badger dens significantly enhanced Companhia das Lezírias’s capacity for non-invasive wildlife monitoring. By providing accurate locations of active setts, our contribution directly facilitated:
Efficient Camera Trapping: Allowing researchers to maximize data collection on badger behavior and population dynamics.
Improved Population Data: Contributing to a more robust understanding of the local badger population’s size, structure, and health within this important managed landscape.
Informed Management Decisions: Providing crucial baseline data that can be used by Companhia das Lezírias for sustainable land management practices that consider and support badger populations. This collaboration underscored the invaluable role of canine detection in comprehensive, long-term wildlife monitoring programs.
