TuroCat Project

  • Project Context: The European Polecat (Mustela putorius) is critically endangered in Catalonia, representing one of the region’s most threatened carnivorous mammals. Its severe population decline is driven by habitat loss, road mortality, invasive species competition, and pesticide use. The multi-partner TuroCat project was initiated to avert the polecat’s extinction by focusing on population recovery, reintroduction, and habitat restoration in Catalonia.
 
  • Our Objective: Our team was specifically engaged by the Trenca Foundation (EccoTrenca) to enhance their in-house canine detection capabilities for the TuroCat project. Our primary objective was to provide expert mentorship and practical, hands-on training support, enabling EccoTrenca’s handler and their dogs to effectively contribute to the precise and non-invasive detection of European Polecats, crucial for the project’s success.
 
  • Methodology: Our unique contribution involved a direct, collaborative approach to capacity building:
    • We worked intensively alongside EccoTrenca’s existing handler and their detection dogs, providing specialized, real-time mentoring and guidance in the nuances of scent detection for elusive species.
    • Our own highly proficient detection dog worked in tandem with EccoTrenca’s canine team, offering a live demonstration of advanced techniques and providing a crucial benchmark for their training progression. This peer-to-peer approach facilitated rapid skill transfer and refinement.
    • Through this collaborative training, we helped to refine methodologies for detecting subtle scent signatures of polecat scat (feces) and other indicators of presence across complex Catalan landscapes.
 
  • Outcome & Impact: Our direct involvement in training and mentoring significantly strengthened EccoTrenca’s internal capacity for canine conservation. This enhanced their ability to conduct efficient and non-invasive surveys, which is fundamental to the TuroCat project’s objectives. By contributing to the development of a highly skilled local detection dog team, our work is directly supporting the accurate identification of remaining polecat populations and critical habitats.
